March 28, 2014 – The Biola University Eagles men’s lacrosse team took a 6-5 lead into halftime against the Banana Slugs of U.C. Santa Cruz, but a strong second half propelled the Slugs to victory. Santa Cruz outscored Biola 12-3 in the second half as their defense clamped down and their offense found their stride.
Both teams traded goals throughout the back-and-forth first quarter, taking a 4-4 tie into the second. The Eagles managed a slight edge in the second, outscoring the Slugs 2-1 to take a 6-5 lead into halftime, but the story of the game was the second half. The Santa Cruz offense came alive in the third, scoring seven goals, and allowing only one, to break the game open. The fourth quarter was much of the same, as the Slugs tacked on five more, to Biola’s two, to ensure the 17-9 victory.
Eric Gamelson (So., Attack) lead the Eagles in total points with five, on three goals and two assists. Riley Corbett (Jr., Midfield) wasn’t far behind, with four total points on three goals and one assist. Josh Nordstrom (Jr., Midfield) and Bryce Hummel (Fr., Midfield) notched one goal and one assist each, while Jon Prichard (Fr., Attack) rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with one goal. David Shaum (So., Attack) and Matt Casto (Fr., Midfield) both tallied one assist, and John Harzan (Fr., Goalie) made 12 saves.
