February 16, 2018 – As part of our Biola Lacrosse Connections newsletter, we feature a player from the current team, and ask them “Why did you choose to join the Biola lacrosse team?” February’s featured player is Austin Gewecke. Austin is a sophomore midfielder from Branchville, NJ. Here’s why Austin chose to play lacrosse at Biola:
When I first came to Biola, I had no plans to play lacrosse. I initially wanted to play on the soccer team, but that did not end up working out. As I began my first semester at Biola, which was my first time not playing a sport since I was five years old, I immediately realized how much I missed being on a team and having that type of community around me. I had become friends with a few guys on the team the first couple weeks of school, and after telling them I played lacrosse from 4th-8th grade before going to a high school without a team, they convinced me to come out to a practice.
The minute I stepped on the field I realized how much I had missed playing lacrosse and by the end of practice I felt so welcomed by the guys on the team that I knew that this was something that I wanted to commit to. I honestly believe that joining the lacrosse team was one of the best decisions I’ve made in college as well as one of God’s biggest blessings to me thus far.
Guys always talk about the community on the team and it may seem stereotypical, but there really is nothing like what we have going on our team. Some of my best friends are also my teammates and that is something that simply makes my time on the field even better. Being on the lacrosse team at Biola will no doubt be one of the highlights for me when I look back at my time in college.
