Feb. 8, 2014 – The Biola University Eagles hosted The Claremont Colleges Cougars in their second game of the season at Biola University. Both teams started the game on a tear, scoring nine goals combined in the first quarter. Biola scored five goals on six shots in the first quarter, taking a 5-4 lead.
Both teams slowed down after the first, and the defenses started to show up, with both teams trading goals in the second and third quarters. The Eagles took a 6-5 into halftime, and an 8-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter marked the only quarter that the Cougars outscored Biola, allowing Claremont to tie the game at 10 each in regulation. Biola went on the offensive immediately in the overtime period, thanks to a 1-minute Claremont penalty that gave the Eagles the man-advantage. Josh Nordstrom (Jr., Midfield) got free in the middle of field for the game-winning goal in the last second of the man-advantage.
The win marks the first ever win for Biola over Claremont, in a match-up that has been played every year since the 2002 season. Jon Prichard (Fr., Attack) lead the Eagles in goals and total points with four goals and one assist. David Shaum (So., Attack) and Bryce Hummel (Fr., Midfield) both notched four total points; Shaum scored three goals with one assist, and Hummel assisted on four goals.
Matt Casto (Fr., Midfield) scored one goal and assisted on one goal and Zechariah Liszewski (Fr., Midfield) and Nordstrom rounded out the goal scoring with one goal each. Nordstrom added two assists to his totals, while Riley Corbett (Jr., Midfield) and Eric Gamelson (So., Attack) both added an assist. John Harzan (Fr., Goalie) saved 18 shots, and allowed only nine, for a .667 save percentage.
