February 19, 2012 – The Biola University men’s lacrosse team cruised to a 24-3 win over Cal Lutheran in their first SLC D2 conference game of the season. The win is the team’s second in a row, following a 17-0 win in a scrimmage against Redlands on February 18.
The Eagles scored early and often, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. A short-handed Cal Lutheran squad got on the board with a goal in the second, but Biola’s offense kept on rolling, with seven more goals in the second quarter. Biola put up five goals in both the third and fourth quarters, and Cal Lutheran netted two more goals in the third.
Biola’s offense was lead by junior attackman Jeff Clark, who ended the day with four goals, five assists and six groundballs. Not far behind was senior attackman Adam Kingston with three goals, four assists and one groundball. Rounding out the starting attack line was senior attackman Marc Morgan with two goals, one assist and two groundballs.
The Eagles’ midfield scoring was lead by senior midfielder Jon McMahan who had three goals, two assists and five groundballs. Junior midfielder Scott Gamelson had two goals, one assist and three groundballs, and freshman midfielder Josh Nordstrom added three goals and one groundball, with two of his goals coming after moving to attack in the third quarter.
The rest of the midfield scoring was: senior David Sigley with one goal, two assists and two groundballs; freshman Matt Young with two goals, one assist and a team high eight groundballs; senior Austin Foxworthy with one goal, one assist and one groundball; junior J.T. Moranksi with one goal, one assist and three groundballs; junior Jairus Burish with one goal and two groundballs; and freshman Riley Corbett with one goal and one groundball.
Also contributing to Biola’s 54 ground balls were freshman midfielder Joseph Bartels with two groundballs, sophomore defenseman Kyle Brogdon with three groundballs, senior defenseman Justin Harrington with two groundballs, sophomore long-stick midfielder David Martin with two groundballs, junior midfielder Joel Williams with three groundballs, and sophomore midfielder Kyle Quiroz and junior midfielder Bobby Welty with one groundball each.
Senior goalie Sean Lane blocked seven shots, and scooped five groundballs in the win. Williams, Young and Moranski combined to win 18 of 28 faceoffs; Williams went 8-11, Young went 6-11, and Moranski went 4-6.
The Eagles take on #10 Concordia in their next game, February 25, at Biola.
