Mar. 1, 2014 – The Biola University Eagles men’s lacrosse team took on the UC San Diego Tritons on a rainy Saturday night, in what turned out to be a wild finish. The game featured plenty of rain, and the first ever lightning delay at Biola.

The Eagles were able to jump out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, but a 1-minute illegal stick penalty between the first and second quarters spurred the Tritons on in the second quarter. The Tritons capitalized twice on the non-releasable man-up, before lightning forced both teams indoors. After the delay Biola was able to keep pace with UCSD, and both teams went into halftime tied at 6.

The third quarter played out much like the first, and Biola was able to jump out to a 9-6 lead after three quarters. UCSD was held to one goal in the fourth until they strung together four straight goals late in the quarter to take a 12-11 lead with 1:30 left in the game.

Bryce Hummel (Fr., Midfield) was the final piece of a clear and pushed the Eagles’ transition game, scoring to tie the game with just 24-seconds remaining. UCSD initially won the ensuing face-off, but an errant pass into their offensive box lead Biola on the break once again. David Shaum (So., Attack) grabbed the groundball, fought through 3 defenders and found a cutting Riley Corbett (Jr., Midfield) open in front of the crease for the game-winning goal with 3-seconds left on the clock.

Jon Prichard (Fr., Attack) continued with the hot shooting stroke, notching five goals and one assist. Prichard has scored at least four goals in five of his seven games played. Shaum tallyied nine points on five goals and four assists. Shaum has scored at least three goals in five of his seven games played this season.

Hummel’s two goals and Corbett’s goal were the only other goals scored in the win, while Eric Gamelson (So., Attack) and Josh Nordstrom (Jr., Midfield) each chipped in with two assists. John Harzan (Fr., Goalie) added 12 more saves to his season total.
